Hades II Witch's Staff Build Guide -- Descura, All 4 Aspects (Post-Launch Patch 2)
This guide covers Melinoe's default Nocturnal Arm, the Witch's Staff (in-game name Descura), with build paths for all four aspects: Melinoe (default), Circe, Momus, and Anubis (Hidden). Numbers and meta calls are current to post-launch Patch 2.
TL;DR
The Witch's Staff has four aspects covering every Fear bracket. Aspect of Melinoe is the entry-level 32 Fear all-rounder. item:aspect-of-circe is the safest 62 to 65 Fear clear in the game on a cast-spam loop. item:aspect-of-momus is the survival pick that converts Omega Special hits into healing. item:aspect-of-anubis is the lowest-APM S-tier aspect, S-tier per the 32-Fear runner consensus. The two standout meta builds are Circe Always-Be-Casting for high-Fear surface and underworld pushes, and Anubis Zoning Fields for low-APM high-Fear runs.
Why the Witch's Staff
item:witch-staff is the only weapon Melinoe owns at the start of a run, and it is the only Nocturnal Arm that asks you to play melee and caster in the same combo. A quick close-range Attack handles trash that closes the gap. Long-range Omega Specials and Omega Casts cover the kiting half of the moveset. That hybrid identity is why the staff carries three of the eight named meta builds in the post-1.0 community: Circe, Anubis, and Melinoe Balanced all live on the same weapon, but they read like three different games once you load the aspect.
All 4 Aspects
Aspect of Melinoe (Default)
Unlock: default, no cost Modifier: Channel Omega moves faster. Best for: First 32 Fear pushes, post-patch tier-list shakeout testing. Meta build: Melinoe Staff Balanced All-Rounder (32 Fear entry-level)
The default aspect's value is its lack of restriction. Wide hitboxes stun multiple enemies on the basic attack. Fast Omega channels create space when packs collapse. Whatever Olympian roster the run rolls, this aspect clicks with it, which is why HackTheMinotaur reports a 70 percent clear rate at rank 1 before the player optimizes anything.
The Mobalytics-featured "Love and Thunder" combo by Vytautas pairs Aphrodite Heart Strike with Zeus on Special, but the aspect is open enough that Hera attack and Apollo cast routes both work. Lock magick gain in the second biome (Lucid Gain or Born Gain) and run two curses to activate item:origination. That is the entire optimization checklist.
Aspect of Circe (Standard)
Unlock: Silver x5, Lotus x5 Modifier: Grants Serenity after 21 attacks. Best for: Sustained ranged DPS at high Fear. Meta build: Circe Staff Always-Be-Casting (62 to 65 Fear, HookieDookie-verified)
Circe is the safest high-Fear clear in the post-1.0 meta. The build spams Omega Casts placing 200 to 400 damage homing orbs. Attacks and Specials only exist to proc statuses and reposition. Sustained DPS sits above 300 without ever entering melee range. The cast loop is the entire run.
Aphrodite's Psychic Leash anchors the build. It is the central scaling vector and the magick-refund engine: Leash returns roughly 50 percent of the magick spent on each cast that lands. Layer Storm Ring (Zeus, multi-hit lightning) or Smolder Ring (Hestia, persistent 20 DPS scorch) on top. Apollo Lucid Gain is the magick anchor, mandatory unless you stack three other Gain sources. Pom-scaling cast hammers double cast size at rank 5, so prioritize them in the hammer pool. Strong against stationary bosses; weak against frequent movers like Chronos phase 1 and Eris.
item:the-furies sits high on the arcana grid because every cast counts as damage to enemies inside it. item:persistence keeps the run alive long enough for Serenity to matter.
Aspect of Momus (Standard)
Unlock: Limestone x2, Pearl x1 Modifier: Absorb Omega Special to restore life at low health. Best for: Vow of Forfeit, low-HP scaling vows, players who want a self-sustain caster.
Momus is the survival aspect. The Omega Special doubles as a heal trigger when Melinoe drops below the threshold, which lets the staff function on Vow of Forfeit and other vows that punish dash-dependent positioning. Pair with item:adamant-shard for a Hephaestus-rare boon pool and lean on item:death to convert leftover damage into HP regen between rooms. The aspect rarely tops damage charts but it owns the runs where the goal is to outlast rather than race the timer.
Aspect of Anubis (Hidden Aspect)
Unlock: Fang x2, Tears x5 (after Hidden Aspect quest) Modifier: Persistent damage fields with every attack and special. Best for: Low-APM high-Fear push. Meta build: Anubis Staff Zoning Fields (high-Fear, S-tier per 32-Fear runner consensus)
Anubis is the lowest-APM S-tier aspect in the game. Every attack and special drops a 30 DPS field. Drag and reposition fields with the Special. Enemies take continuous damage walking through the zones; Melinoe focuses on dodging while the fields handle the math. The 32-Fear runner consensus calls Anubis the most fun aspect with very few things that don't work.
Two scaling paths cover the build. The Apollo Omega-Special path leans on Apollo on Special to expand the field radius, with the legendary and Double Moonshot hammer as the chase targets. Pair Apollo with Ares Cut Above and Coffin Nails for the community-validated duo. The Hera flat-damage path stacks flat damage on every field tick using Hera global modifiers, with Heaven Flourish on the Special carrying the burst. Both routes work; pick whichever god offers first.
Patch 2 added a Tribulation (Moon Water) interaction worth flagging. Tribulation now activates "after you take damage" effects multiple times in a row, which pairs strongly with Anubis's face-tank-inside-fields playstyle. Run item:adamant-shard at start, swap to item:iridescent-fan mid-run, then item:engraved-pin for boss biomes, finishing on item:calling-card.
Daedalus Hammer Picks
Pom-scaling cast hammers are the priority for any cast-heavy aspect. They double cast size at rank 5, which is why Circe builds always reach for them first. Cast-projectile-count and cast-area hammers feed the same scaling axis. For Anubis specifically, hammers that increase Special hits or extend Special range stretch the field placement window further across each room.
