What the Matriarch Is
The Matriarch is the second boss-class ARC, similar in scale to the entity:queen but armed with homing missiles instead of lasers and mortars. The cruelty of the fight is the homing tracking: cover that would block a direct line-of-sight shot does not necessarily block missiles that arc around obstacles. A Raider hiding behind a concrete pillar can still die to a missile that loops over the top.
The Matriarch spawns under the Harvester map condition, primarily on Dam Battlegrounds. She drops the same tier of loot as the Queen: unique blueprints, Raider Hatch keys, top-tier materials, and the Matriarch Reactor required for the Trophy Display Project Stage 5 finale.
How to Find Her
Harvester map condition only. Check the lobby screen before queuing. Dam Battlegrounds is the most reliable Matriarch spawn location. Some Spaceport rotations also include her, but the Dam fight has cleaner sight lines for the squad role assignments.
Once you load in, the Matriarch announces herself with the missile-volley audio cue. She patrols the central zone; she does not pursue across the map until she has line of sight.
Phase Breakdown
The Matriarch fight follows the same armor-strip-then-core pattern as the Queen, but the engagement rules are different because the missiles do not respect static cover.
Phase 1: missile salvo opening
She opens with a missile volley as soon as line of sight is established. Survive by moving. Standing still is the death pattern; the missiles correct mid-flight to catch a stationary target. Sprint perpendicular to the launch direction and the missiles overshoot.
Hard cover that breaks line of sight on the Matriarch's body still works against the initial volley but does not stop missiles already in the air. Plan for missiles that hit cover and wrap around to the next opening. Bunkers with overhead concrete are the safest pre-engagement position.
Phase 2: cooldown gaps
The Matriarch fires in salvos with predictable cooldown windows between volleys. Watch the missile-launcher arms; when they recoil after a salvo, you have roughly 4 to 6 seconds before the next volley. That window is your push opportunity. Coordinate squad fire on a single armor plate per cooldown gap.
item:hullcracker is the plate-stripping weapon of choice. Three to four shots per plate. item:bettina and item:ferro work as backup options when ammo is running short. Yellow leg joints are secondary weak points; hitting them staggers her and extends the cooldown gap by a half-second, which compounds across the fight.
Phase 3: red core exposure
When all plates are stripped, the red core opens. The kill window opens too, but the Matriarch keeps firing missiles through the core phase. Do not stop moving. Burst the core with item:jupiter Energy sniper rounds; the highest per-shot damage in the game against the core. item:bettina full-auto Heavy ammo also works for sustained core damage if your squad runs the rifle-heavy loadout.
The fight ends when the core takes enough damage. Expect 30 to 45 seconds of constant movement during the core phase.
Recommended Squad Loadout
The Matriarch fight rewards mobility more than the Queen fight does. The ARC Raiders Boss Hunter Build Guide covers the full template; the Matriarch-specific deviations:
- Augment: item:combat-mk3-aggressive for the regen between salvos. item:tactical-mk3-defensive is also strong for the integrated Shield Recharger.
- Shield: Light shield is sometimes better than Heavy here because the movement penalty becomes a death sentence. A Heavy shield Raider who cannot sprint perpendicular to a missile launch dies to the volley. The math is not universal; if your squad runs three Heavy shields and coordinates rotation, the Heavy ceiling holds. Solo or duo, lean Light.
- Primary: item:hullcracker for plate stripping during cooldown gaps.
- Secondary: item:jupiter for the core punish. item:bettina for sustained core damage.
- Quick-use: item:bandage x2, item:shield-recharger x2, item:vita-spray x1, item:smoke-grenade x1 for the panic disengage if a missile catches you in the open.
- Skills: Marathon Runner for sprint stamina is mandatory because the fight is a sprint-heavy 8 to 10 minutes. Slip and Slide and Effortless Roll add the dodge windows that beat missile tracking. Loaded Arms reduces the Hullcracker reload time. Pick Conditioning over Survival for this fight.
Counter-Play Notes
Three patterns separate Raiders who clear the Matriarch from those who die to her:
- Sprint perpendicular to missile launches. Sprinting toward or away from the Matriarch lets the missiles correct cleanly. Sprinting perpendicular forces the missiles to over-correct and miss the target window.
- Use overhead cover during volleys. Bunkers with concrete ceilings are the only cover that reliably stops a homing missile from wrapping over the top. Plan your push routes around overhead-cover positions.
- Burn the cooldown gap, not the salvo. Pushing damage during a salvo gets you killed. Pushing during the cooldown gap finishes the fight.
Solo Matriarch Strategy (Brutal but Possible)
The Matriarch is harder to solo than the Queen because the missile tracking does not give a stationary Raider time to recover. If you must solo, run the ARC Raiders Solo Stealth Build Guide with item:looting-mk3-survivor for the 80 weight ceiling, a Light shield (mandatory; Medium shield is the maximum), item:hullcracker plus item:jupiter, and a item:photoelectric-cloak for repositioning between salvos.
Plan a 25 minute fight. Use overhead cover for every salvo. Push damage only during cooldown gaps. The Matriarch Reactor drop justifies the time investment for any Raider chasing the Trophy Display Project Stage 5 finale.
Loot Notes
Same loot tier as the Queen, with the Matriarch-specific reactor drop:
- Matriarch Reactor: required for Trophy Display Project Stage 5. Three needed for the stage.
- Unique blueprints: Hullcracker, Jupiter, Aphelion, and the Matriarch-only Bombardier blueprint variants.
- Raider Hatch keys: rare drops, identical to the Queen's hatch-key roll.
- Top-tier materials: ARC Synthetic Resin, Performance Steel, Magnetic Accelerator at increased rates.
Plan the extract. Matriarch kills draw the same lobby attention as Queen kills. The closest extract is the safest extract; pre-throw a item:smoke-grenade on the route if you hear footsteps.
FAQ
How do I find the Matriarch in ARC Raiders?
The Matriarch spawns under the Harvester map condition, primarily on Dam Battlegrounds. Check the lobby screen before queuing. Outside the Harvester rotation, she does not spawn.
Can I solo the Matriarch?
Possible but punishing. The missile tracking does not give a static solo Raider time to recover between salvos. If you must solo, run item:looting-mk3-survivor, a Light shield, item:hullcracker plus item:jupiter, and plan a 25 minute fight that uses overhead cover for every volley.
What is the best weapon against the Matriarch?
item:hullcracker for plate stripping during the cooldown gaps. item:jupiter for the red-core kill window. The combination clears the fight in the shortest window.
Why does my cover not block the missiles?
The Matriarch's missiles home and arc around regular cover. Overhead cover (bunker ceilings, building interiors with concrete roofs) is the only reliable counter. A concrete pillar that breaks line of sight on the Matriarch's body does not necessarily stop a missile that already locked on you.
Should I run a Heavy shield against the Matriarch?
Solo or duo: no. The Heavy shield movement penalty kills you because you cannot sprint perpendicular fast enough to dodge the missile salvos. Trio with role coordination: yes, the squad rotation covers the mobility gap and the Heavy shield ceiling pays off during the core phase.
How is the Matriarch different from the Queen?
The Matriarch uses homing missiles that wrap around cover; the entity:queen uses lasers and mortars that respect line of sight but ignore soft cover. The Matriarch fight is a mobility fight; the Queen fight is a positioning fight. See the ARC Raiders Queen Boss Guide for that engagement.
