Tainted Grail: The Word is Silent Quest Guide
The Word is Silent is a side quest that branches off Unforgettable and ends with a monk turning his back on the church. You grab the Letter to the Prior on the Asylum Island, carry it to Brother Riagan in a fortress garden in Horns of the South, wait a day, and hear him denounce his faith. It is a short quest with no branching outcome, but there is an experience bonus and a deeper resolution waiting if you bring one extra item along.
Here is how to run it cleanly.
Pick up the Letter to the Prior
The Letter to the Prior is a one-shot pickup on the Asylum Island, available after the Golem boss. This is a single grab, so do not skip past it: once you leave the island, you cannot come back for it. Clear the Golem, collect the letter, and you have what you need to start the quest proper. Players who rush off the island the moment the boss drops tend to miss this letter entirely and lock themselves out of the quest, so make a deliberate sweep of the area before you go.
The Word is Silent branches off Unforgettable, the quest where you recover Katrin's unsent Old Letter and learn she died in childbirth at the hands of the mad Red Priest. The two quests share that thread of church cruelty, and the letter you carry off the Asylum Island is what carries it forward. If you have already run Unforgettable, the church's reputation in your eyes is exactly where it needs to be for this one to land.
Find Brother Riagan in the fortress garden
Off the island, you are looking for Brother Riagan in Horns of the South. He is in the garden on the northeast side of the fortress, and he is only there during the day. If you arrive at night and cannot find him, rest until morning and check the garden again. Hand him the Letter to the Prior and let the conversation play out.
Wait a day for the resolution
After you deliver the letter, Riagan needs time. Wait a day and return to him, and he denounces the church. The truth in the letter is enough to break his faith in the institution he served. There is no choice to make here and no way to talk him out of it or steer him toward another outcome. The quest is linear by design: the church's rot does the work, and Riagan walks away from it.
The Father Vaughan's Notes bonus
The Word is Silent rewards 75 XP on its own, but you can do better. If you also give Riagan Father Vaughan's Notes, you earn an experience bonus and a deeper resolution to his story. The notes round out the picture of what the church did and give Riagan more to reckon with, so it is worth tracking them down before you finish the conversation. Bring the notes and the letter together for the fuller version of the ending.
The XP here is modest, so do not run The Word is Silent for the numbers. Run it for the story and the bonus resolution. Holding the notes back costs you nothing but the fuller ending, so there is no reason to hand Riagan the letter alone if you can find the notes first.
Is it worth doing
The Word is Silent is a short, low-stakes quest with a payoff that lands harder than its XP suggests. It is the back half of a two-part indictment of the church that starts in Unforgettable, and seeing both quests through gives Riagan's break a weight it would not have on its own. There is no fighting once you are off the Asylum Island and no choice to second-guess, which makes it an easy one to slot in between heavier Horns of the South content.
For the quest this one branches from and the rest of the region's side content, the walkthrough hub maps Horns of the South and Cuanacht quest by quest.
