Tainted Grail Excalibur Guide: How to Get the King's Soul Sword

By BrokenBuilds Wiki6 min readUpdated

TL;DR

Excalibur is not a sword you swing. Pulling it grants a fragment of King Arthur's soul, which unlocks the Excalibur node in the King's Soul skill tree. You reach the blade during the main quest A World to Win, at the Horns of the South fortress, in front of the Captain's Quarters. Two things will kill you here: touching the sword before the Lord of the Seas deems you worthy (instant death), and the health drain that runs while you pull it. Beat the drain with Queen's Honey for a full heal, or Arthur's time-slow power, or by stacking max HP and lowering the difficulty.

What Excalibur actually is

Most people search for item:excalibur expecting an equippable weapon, and that expectation is the first thing worth correcting. The blade in the stone is not loot you carry. When you pull it, you extract a fragment of Arthur's soul, sometimes called Arthur's Memory, and bind it to power.

That power is a skill node. Excalibur lives in the King's Soul skill tree, and the node it grants is one of the strongest defensive-aggressive payoffs in that tree. Here is what item:the-excalibur-skill does:

  • Killing enemies restores a portion of King's Soul.
  • Finishers restore 400 percent more King's Soul.
  • Your damage increases by 50 percent for each enemy killed.
  • While King's Soul is active, you take 50 percent less damage.

There are no upgrade tiers. It is a single static node that turns your King's Soul resource into a snowball: kill, build the gauge, hit harder, take less, repeat. For a late-game King's Soul build, this is the keystone that makes the whole tree worth investing in. It slots cleanly into a melee carry like our Two-Handed Warrior build guide, where every kill compounds your damage.

Where and when you get it

The sword sits at the Horns of the South, a fortress keep, encased in stone inside a monument with several hands gripping the hilt. You will find it in front of the Captain's Quarters.

This is part of the main quest A World to Win. item:caradoc is the one who points you here, telling you Excalibur holds a piece of Arthur's soul and sending you to retrieve it. You do not stumble onto this blind. By the time you stand in front of the stone, the game has already set up both of the gates below.

Gate one: be deemed worthy first

Do not touch the blade early. If you interact with Excalibur before the Lord of the Seas has deemed you worthy, the game kills you on the spot. No animation to interrupt, no second chance in that moment. It is a hard wall.

Worthiness comes through the Keeper ritual. As A World to Win plays out, you work through the events tied to Shadow of the Horns and Shuffling the Deck, and the Captain points you toward an ancient ritual to become a Keeper. You perform that ritual with the Lord of the Seas, he names you a Keeper, and he deems Arthur worthy of the blade. Only then does the stone respond to you.

When the monument is ready, interact with the statue to draw out Arthur's Memory, then walk to the yellow sphere on the right and bind the soul fragment into the stone. That binding is the pull, and the pull is where the second gate hits.

Gate two: surviving the health drain

The extraction runs on a timer, and your health drains the entire time it ticks. Go in unprepared and you die before the pull completes. The drain is fast, fast enough that raw stubbornness usually loses. You need a plan before you press the button.

We have ordered the survival methods from easiest to hardest. Pick the first one you can manage.

Queen's Honey (the clean answer)

Queen's Honey fully restores your health in a single use. Pop it mid-pull and the timer finishes long before your bar empties again. This is the simplest, most reliable counter, and it is the one we recommend if you have the jars.

You get Queen's Honey from the side quest Confrontation Looks Like Hope, the bee questline. If you kill the item:queen-bee and side with Broc, the reward is ten jars of Queen's Honey, plus the Sting sword and 1000 XP. Ten full heals is far more than this single moment needs, so doing the bee quest before A World to Win leaves you with a stockpile for the rest of the run.

Arthur's time-slow power

If you do not have honey, lean on Arthur's Slow Time ability. Activate it, then interact with the sword. The extraction timer keeps moving at its normal pace while your health drains at the slowed rate, so the pull finishes with bar to spare. It takes a little timing, but it costs you nothing in items.

Stack HP and lower the difficulty

The brute-force route is to outlast the drain. Max your health, reallocating attributes with item:origin-potions if you need to push the number higher, and you can simply tank the timer. On lower difficulties the health depletes much slower, so dropping the difficulty for this single interaction turns a tense pull into a routine one. Bring standard healing potions or food as backup either way.

The achievement: By Your Own Hand

There is a reward for doing this cleanly. Pull the sword without outside help, meaning potions and your own kit only, no exploits, and you unlock the By Your Own Hand achievement. The Slow Time route and a well-timed Queen's Honey both qualify, since both are part of your own loadout rather than a cheat. If you are hunting the achievement, the honey-or-Slow-Time combo with high HP is the safest line that still counts.

Putting it together

The fastest clean path: run Confrontation Looks Like Hope first, kill the Queen Bee, bank your ten jars of Queen's Honey. Push A World to Win until you complete the Keeper ritual and the Lord of the Seas names you worthy. Walk up to the monument in front of the Captain's Quarters, draw Arthur's Memory from the statue, bind it at the yellow sphere, and drink a jar of honey the instant the drain starts. The pull finishes, the King's Soul tree opens up, and the Excalibur node is yours to slot into a late-game build that hits harder with every kill. If you are deciding which archetype carries it best, the class tier list ranks every melee path it pairs with.
