Hades II Fear and Oath of the Unseen Guide (Post-Launch Patch 2)
Fear is the post-victory difficulty modifier in Hades II. After Melinoe lands her first credits-roll clear, the Oath of the Unseen unlocks. You pledge Vows on the Oath, each Vow adds Fear to the run total, and your Fear score gates Testament rewards and Nightmare currency for aspect rank-ups. It is the same shape as Hades 1's Pact of Punishment with new vocabulary and a tighter ladder.
TL;DR
Sixteen Vows, three ranks each, with maximum reachable Fear sitting around 55 on the published roster. Each rank adds Fear and intensifies one modifier; the score on the gauge is the additive total of every active Vow. Testament rewards begin at 32 Fear, which is the standard high-difficulty target. Above 32, Vow combinations stop being optional and start dictating which build chassis can survive. Documented community ceilings sit at 62 to 65 Fear across four aspects, with 67 Fear reported unseeded.
How Fear Works
You activate Vows from the Oath screen before a run. Every rank you take adds 1 Fear to the total, so a single Vow at Rank 3 reads identically to three different Vows at Rank 1 on the gauge, even though the run plays nothing alike. Fear is purely additive; there is no multiplier, no synergy bonus, no combo score.
Testaments are weapon-aspect-specific challenge tiers, roughly 24 in the base roster. Each Testament shows the Fear floor required to attempt it. Beating one awards Nightmare for aspect rank-ups and high-tier Incantations, then raises the floor for the next Testament on that weapon-aspect path. The endgame ratchets this way: clearing Testament N+1 demands more Fear than N, which forces you to take harsher Vows or rank existing ones up.
The Vow List
Vow of Pain
Damage Melinoe takes increases. Rank 1 gives plus 20 percent incoming, Rank 2 plus 60 percent, Rank 3 plus 100 percent. The cleanest scaling Vow on the roster.
Vow of Hordes
More enemies in every encounter. Punishes single-target chassis and rewards AoE detonators.
Vow of Time
A run timer starts pressuring efficiency. Slow rotation builds suffer; speed chassis barely notice.
Vow of Wards
Enemies gain resistance. Flat damage builds lose tempo; status-stacking builds keep working.
Vow of Forfeit
Frequent dodging is punished. The dash-spam speedrun chassis is the target. Berserker and zoning builds pay nothing.
Vow of Frenzy
Punishes specific build mechanics tied to crit chains and back-to-back triggers. The speedrun killer; collapses the crit windows that Medea Skull lives on.
Vow of Rivals
The other crit-collapsing Vow. Stacks with Frenzy to bury anything built around precise burst windows. Slow-rotation builds (Anubis, Circe) ignore it.
Vow of Grit
Mirrors Vow of Pain on the offensive side. Stack it when you want raw difficulty without unfamiliar mechanics.
Vow of Menace
Elite enemies appear more often. Run consistency drops; brittle builds get punished.
Vow of Return
Enemies return or revive in some form. Over-killing trash becomes a tax.
Vow of Fangs
Enemy attacks bite harder on connect. Pairs with Vow of Pain to chew through health bars fast.
Vow of Scars
Healing efficiency falls. Lifesteal builds (Nergal Axe) feel this most.
Vow of Debt
Currency and resource costs rise across the shop economy. The slow strangulation Vow.
Vow of Shadow
Visibility and telegraph clarity drop. Reaction-based dodging gets harder; pre-read patterns still work.
Vow of Void
Strips an option from the run, often around resource regeneration. Magick-hungry builds suffer.
Vow of Hubris
Penalties scale with how confidently you push. The risk-reward Vow.
Vow of Denial
Removes a category of help, usually around Olympian access or boon variety. Forces you to commit to whatever rolls early.
Recommended Fear Ladder
0 to 8 Fear (Beginner)
Run item:aspect-of-melinoe-witch-staff on the item:witch-staff. HackTheMinotaur reports a 70 percent clear rate at rank 1 with this aspect even before optimization. Pick Vow of Wards Rank 1 plus Vow of Hordes Rank 1 plus Vow of Time Rank 1; that is 3 Fear of mild pressure with no surprise mechanics.
8 to 32 Fear (Intermediate)
Origination becomes mandatory on the Arcana grid; learn to fish for two curses early. Rotate onto item:aspect-of-circe or item:aspect-of-nyx to learn how omega-cast and Nightspawn rotations feel under pressure. Stack Vow of Pain and Vow of Grit ranks first; their effects are predictable and the Fear yield per rank is solid.
32 Fear (The Threshold)
Testaments unlock here. Vow combinations stop being mild. Your build choice now matters more than your Vow choice. item:aspect-of-circe Always-Be-Casting and item:aspect-of-anubis Zoning Fields are the recommended entry chassis: both sustain damage without exposing Melinoe to melee, and both ignore Vow of Frenzy and Vow of Rivals.
32 to 50 Fear (Push)
item:aspect-of-charon on the item:moonstone-axe is DTB-verified at 50 Fear; the omega-cast launcher converts every stationary boss into a sub-15-second fight. Anubis pushes high here on consistency, not burst. The tradeoff in this band is consistency versus ceiling: Charon clears bosses faster, Anubis clears packed rooms safer.
50 to 65 Fear (HookieDookie tier)
Four documented chassis carry this band. item:aspect-of-moros on item:umbral-flames holds the Surface 65-Fear World's First. item:aspect-of-circe sustains 62 to 65 Fear surface and underworld clears. item:aspect-of-nyx on the item:black-coat is HookieDookie-verified at Underworld 65 Fear. item:aspect-of-medea on the item:argent-skull pushes 62 Fear with the speedrun world record chassis.
65 Plus Fear (Unseeded community ceiling)
67 Fear on Medea Skull is the community-reported unseeded ceiling. Above 65, the run becomes a seed-and-rotation puzzle more than a build decision.
How to Pick Vows
The rule is simple: take Vows that punish things your build does not lean on, and skip Vows that target your build's signature mechanic. Vow of Frenzy plus Vow of Rivals together bury speedrun chassis but spare slow-rotation builds; if you are running item:aspect-of-anubis zoning fields, those two Vows are free Fear because the build never relied on crit chains in the first place.
Inversely, if you are pushing Medea Skull, Vow of Forfeit is a tax you cannot afford because the chassis dodges constantly to weave Special hitbox grazes. Match the Vow set to the build's blind spots.
Testaments
Testaments at 32 Fear award cosmetic unlocks and the first tier of Nightmare income. Aspect-specific challenges drop Nightmare-tier rewards above 50 Fear, which is the gating point for high-rank aspect upgrades and rare Incantations. Each weapon has four Testament tracks (one per Aspect), and clearing one raises the floor on the next. The system is designed to keep dragging you up the Fear ladder for the same rewards.
