Hades II Aspect of Melinoe Build Guide, Witch's Staff Balanced All-Rounder, 32 Fear (Post-Launch Patch 2)

If you have never cleared a 32 Fear run before, the item:aspect-of-melinoe-witch-staff on the item:witch-staff (Descura) is the weapon to do it on. HackTheMinotaur reports a 70% clear rate at rank 1, before any optimization, on the Default aspect of the staff.

TL;DR

Aspect of Melinoe is the Default aspect on Witch's Staff (Descura), not the Hidden one. Its value is the lack of restriction. The headline package is Vytautas's "Love and Thunder" combo from Mobalytics, which pairs Aphrodite Heart Strike on Attack with Zeus on Special. Beyond that, Melinoe scales with whatever Olympian rolls strongest in your run, which is what makes it the right pick for a player who is still learning the staff's rhythm at high Fear.

Why This Build Works

The aspect speeds up Omega channels on every move the staff has access to. That extra channel speed protects the Witch's Staff identity, which is a hybrid of melee bonk strings, ranged Omega Cast pressure, and Omega Special repositioning. Faster channels mean you can throw a Cast and still finish the animation before a packed pull collapses on you.

The basic attack on Witch's Staff has a wide hitbox that staggers groups of small enemies. That stagger window is what lets a 32 Fear new player survive the swarm rooms in Erebus that punish slow weapons. Open boon priority means whatever god the run hands you can carry the build, instead of forcing a rejection-roll spiral on offers that do not fit.

The "Love and Thunder" Build (Vytautas)

The Mobalytics-featured Vytautas build pairs Aphrodite Heart Strike on Attack with Zeus on Special. Heart Strike applies Charm on hit. Zeus on Special then chains lightning to every charmed enemy in range, which turns a single Special tap into a room-wide proc whenever the Charm window is up. The two-Olympian package is forgiving because both gods have several offer slots in the standard pool, so the lock rate stays high through biome 2 even without an Iridescent Fan keepsake forcing it.

Step-by-Step Rotation

Open with the Cloud Bangle keepsake in biome 1 for the dodge utility. Take whichever Olympian rolls strongest at the first door. If Aphrodite or Zeus appears early, swap to the item:iridescent-fan for the rest of the biome to lock that god into more offers.

Lock magick Gain in biome 2. Either Lucid Gain (Apollo) or Born Gain (Hera, post-launch) keeps your Omega Cast economy running through Erebus. Skipping the Gain lock is the most common reason a Melinoe run dies in biome 3, because the Cast is your panic button and a panic button without magick is a dead one.

By the end of Erebus, you want both your Attack and Special boons stable. That is your Heart Strike or whichever Attack the run rolled, plus Zeus on Special if you are running Love and Thunder. Pick up two curses by biome 3 to satisfy Origination's two-curse requirement; without that, the arcana card sits dead in your spread.

Boss approach is the standard staff rhythm. Close-range Attack to clear hitboxes, Omega Cast for damage when you have safe space, Omega Special to reposition when you do not. The aspect makes the Omega Special channel fast enough to use as a mid-fight escape rather than a pre-planned ability.

Arcana Loadout

Run a 7-card spread: The Sorceress, The Wayward Son, Persistence, The Swift Runner, Death, Origination, The Furies. This is the standard 32 Fear progression spread. The Sorceress accelerates Omega channels, which doubles down on what the aspect already does. Persistence and Death cover survival. Origination needs two curse types active in your run to fire, so plan one curse from each of two different gods.

The Furies covers the boss-room damage spike at the end of biomes 2 and 3, which is where unoptimized Melinoe runs lose HP. The Swift Runner cuts your room-to-room transit time, which matters because the staff's Cast wants you to set up before pulls aggro.

Keepsake Rotation by Biome

Cloud Bangle to start. Swap to item:iridescent-fan in biome 2 once Aphrodite or Zeus shows up, to lock the god you want for the back half. item:engraved-pin in biome 3 for the boss-room damage. item:adamant-shard for the underworld push or the Chronos approach if you are still on the surface route.

Hammer Picks

If your run is leaning into Cast damage, take Pom-scaling cast hammers. They double cast size at rank 5, which is the same scaling Circe uses to brute-force her high-Fear runs. If you are hard-committed to Heart Strike, flat-attack hammers feed the Charm proc rate better. The aspect is open enough that the hammer pool follows whichever Olympian rolled strongest, not a fixed list.

When to Pick Melinoe Over Circe

Aspect of Circe is the higher-Fear ceiling on the same staff. HookieDookie has cleared 62 to 65 Fear surface and underworld runs on Circe. Melinoe is the post-patch shakedown pick instead. Run it after a tier list change to test which Olympian roster the new patch favors, then graduate to Circe once you know the answer. The lack of restriction is what makes Melinoe valuable for that role, not raw damage ceiling.

Boss-Specific Tips

Chronos phase 1: the Omega Special's repositioning is the standout move. Chronos teleports often, which punishes a stationary Cast spam. The fast Omega channel lets you chase his teleport tells and reset spacing without a HP cost.

Chronos phase 2: the Cast loop here resembles Circe's, but you will be running it at a lower Fear threshold. Stack casts at the boss while he is in the read-able phase, then dodge the screen-clear with the Special.

Polyphemus: close-range Attack chains the giant down without needing the Cast at all. The wide hitbox on the basic attack staggers his swing windups if you commit early.

Typhon: stay at range. Omega Cast is your primary damage. Keep one charge of Special banked for the eye-laser tell.

Common Mistakes

Trying to push high Fear on Melinoe instead of swapping to Circe. The aspect does not have the magick economy to spam Casts at 50+ Fear; that is what Circe is for. Skipping the second-biome Gain lock, which kills the run by Erebus end. Ignoring Origination's two-curse requirement and shipping a dead arcana slot into the boss fights.
