Crimson Desert Characters Guide: Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka

All three playable characters compared. Combat styles, weapon access, when they unlock, and who to play first.

By BrokenBuilds Wiki7 min readUpdated

Crimson Desert gives you three playable characters, each with a distinct combat identity. There is no class system. Your playstyle comes from which character you control, what weapons you equip, where you invest in the skill tree, and which Abyss Cores you slot. All three characters share Abyss Artifact progression, so stat upgrades carry across your roster.

Here is what each character brings to the fight and when you should switch between them.

entity:kliff

Role: Versatile all-rounder Available from: Prologue (starting character) Starting stats: 16 ATK, 14 DEF, 130 Stamina, 50 Spirit, 100 HP, 5% base crit chance

Combat Identity

Kliff is the protagonist and the only character who can complete all main quests and fully explore the Abyss. He starts with a sword, shield, and bow, but has access to all 13 weapon types in the game: sword, greatsword, spear, axe, hammer, mace, rapier, bow, pistol, rifle, hand cannon, dagger, and unarmed.

His Axiom Bracelet grants elemental enhancements (fire, ice, lightning) layered onto melee and ranged attacks. Spirit fuels these abilities and refills when landing attacks on enemies, creating a risk-reward aggression loop where passive play starves your resource pool.

The Watch and Learn system lets Kliff observe enemy maneuvers mid-combat. Time slows during these moments, and if conditions are met, he absorbs the technique permanently at no cost.

Skill Tree

Kliff has the largest skill tree of all three characters, organized into three branches:

  • Blue (Stamina Core): entity:armed-combat-kliff, entity:forward-slash-kliff, entity:turning-slash-kliff, Stab, entity:spinning-slash-kliff, entity:blinding-flash-kliff, entity:marksmanship-kliff, entity:grappling-kliff, entity:unarmed-combat-kliff. Max level 14.
  • Green (Spirit Core): entity:force-palm-kliff, entity:focus-kliff, entity:natures-grasp-kliff, entity:natures-snare-kliff, entity:natures-echo-kliff (attacking illusion), entity:focused-shot-kliff, entity:keen-senses-kliff. Max level 12.
  • Red (Health Core): entity:axiom-force-kliff, entity:flight-kliff, entity:winch-kliff, entity:ambush-kliff, entity:imbue-element-kliff (fire/ice/lightning). Max level 18.

Weapon Swap Note

Kliff requires the entity:quick-swap-kliff skill (entity:armed-combat-damiane Level 5) to swap weapons mid-combo without breaking the attack chain. Until this is unlocked, weapon transitions interrupt your combos. Prioritize entity:armed-combat-oongka early.

Best Builds

The community has optimized Kliff more than any other character. Three of the top five endgame builds are his: Abyssal Lich Spear (best overall endgame build), Critical Rate Boss Killer (near one-shot capability on some bosses), and Elemental Blade (versatile all-content build).

When to Play Kliff

Always, at first. He is required for the main story and offers the widest build experimentation. Even after unlocking entity:damiane and entity:oongka, most players return to Kliff for Abyss exploration and endgame boss farming because his build diversity gives him an answer to every encounter type.

entity:damiane

Role: Glass cannon / agility fighter Available from: Mid-story (second character unlocked) Starting stats: 32 ATK (highest of all three), lowest HP pool

Combat Identity

entity:damiane fights with a rapier and musket/pistol combination, playing as a swashbuckler. Her combat is speed-focused: rapid rapier flurries, quick-step dodges with tight timing windows, and ranged firearm attacks for kiting and marking targets.

She is the only character who can cast spells directly from her hands, giving her ranged elemental options (fire, ice, lightning, wind) that neither Kliff nor entity:oongka can access.

Her signature mechanic is entity:shield-toss-damiane, a bouncing shield projectile that ricochets up to 7 times at max proficiency. This evolves into entity:shield-sentinel-damiane (a floating sentry turret that fires at nearby hostiles) and entity:blade-sentinel-damiane (a more aggressive summoned attacker). These sentinels fight alongside her, adding sustained damage while she focuses on evasion.

entity:damiane can swap weapons without needing the entity:quick-swap-damiane skill. This is built into her kit.

Skill Tree

  • Blue (Stamina Core): entity:smiting-strike-damiane, entity:sword-flurry-damiane, entity:piercing-light-damiane, entity:armed-combat-kliff, entity:smiting-bolt-damiane, entity:shield-toss-damiane, entity:marksmanship-damiane. Max level 14.
  • Green (Spirit Core): entity:focused-shot-damiane, entity:focus-damiane, entity:keen-senses-damiane, entity:shield-sentinel-damiane, entity:blade-sentinel-damiane, entity:natures-grasp-damiane. Max level 12.
  • Red (Health Core): entity:flight-damiane, entity:skystep-damiane, entity:imbue-element-damiane, entity:flame-rush-damiane, entity:frost-mantle-kliff, entity:storm-pillar-damiane, entity:lightning-strike-damiane. Max level 18.

Weapon Access

Narrower than Kliff. entity:damiane uses rapiers, greatswords, firearms (musket/pistol), and a shield (for entity:shield-toss-damiane abilities). She cannot use spears, axes, hammers, maces, bows, or rifles.

Best Builds

  • Steel Rose (Endgame): Alternates entity:white-wind-rapier (10 ATK, ATK Spd Lv 2) and entity:spencer-pistol (13 ATK, ATK Spd Lv 2) with constant repositioning. Core rotation: Gun brands into entity:piercing-light-damiane dash into Sword Burst into Concentrated Shot into Evading Shot, then repeat. Highest DPS potential in the game when executed perfectly.
  • Rapier and Shield: entity:white-wind-rapier + Demenissian Gold-Plated Shield (DEF 6). More survivable, uses Aegis and Fortification Abyss Gears.
  • Dual-Wield Rapier: entity:white-wind-rapier + entity:grace-rapier (11 ATK). Pure offense, easy to set up, good for players learning the character.

When to Play entity:damiane

After you have a solid handle on the combat system. entity:damiane punishes mistakes harder than any other character. Her low HP pool means mistime a quick-step dodge and you go down fast. But for players who master evasion timing, she outputs more damage per combo than Kliff or entity:oongka. She is the skill-expression character.

entity:oongka

Role: Tank / bruiser Available from: Chapter 7 (third and final character) Starting stats: 1,125 HP (highest of all three)

Combat Identity

entity:oongka is an orc warrior built for raw aggression and survivability. He dual-wields two-handed weapons (a feat unique to him through entity:dual-wielding-mastery-oongka at entity:armed-combat-damiane Level 4), specializes in heavy melee attacks, tanking damage, and wide AoE sweeps.

His signature mechanic is Rage. While in entity:focus-oongka mode, entity:oongka enters a Super Armor state that makes him unstoppable during attacks. Combined with entity:explosive-leap-oongka (jumping to a targeted location with an explosive landing), he controls battlefield space through sheer force.

entity:oongka has hyper armor on his sidestep, meaning his dodges absorb hits without interrupting his movement. This makes his dodge timing the most forgiving of all three characters.

Skill Tree

  • Blue (Stamina Core): entity:armed-combat-oongka (includes entity:dual-wielding-mastery-oongka), entity:slash-oongka, entity:rampage-oongka, entity:leaping-smash-oongka, entity:quaking-fury-oongka, entity:raging-lightning-oongka. Max level 14.
  • Green (Spirit Core): entity:focus-kliff, Rage, entity:explosive-leap-oongka, entity:scatter-shot-oongka, entity:explosive-strike-oongka, entity:keen-senses-oongka. Max level 12.
  • Red (Health Core): entity:imbue-element-oongka, entity:flame-quake-oongka, entity:frost-mantle-damiane, entity:storm-howl-oongka, entity:lightning-pulse-oongka, entity:flight-oongka (Rocket Pack). Max level 18.

Weapon Access

The narrowest selection but the heaviest weapons. entity:oongka uses greataxes, hammers, and cannon/blaster ranged weapons. His entity:dual-wielding-mastery-oongka lets him single-hand weapons other characters need both hands for.

Best Builds

  • Mountain Breaker / Siege Titan: entity:double-headed-axe-of-greed (greataxe) + entity:orc-blaster hand cannon. Open with entity:scatter-shot-oongka from the entity:orc-blaster to soften groups, switch to greataxe, activate Rage for super armor, then cleave with entity:rampage-oongka and entity:quaking-fury-oongka. High burst with manageable complexity.
  • Plate armor is always the correct choice for Oongka. Crimson Desert has no equip-load penalty, so heaviest is always best. entity:blackwing-leather-armor (12 DEF, 3 Abyss Core sockets) is the mid-game centerpiece.

Limitations

Oongka has no early flight or gliding option. His Kuku Rocket Pack sits deep in the skill tree, while Kliff and entity:damiane get airborne much sooner. His low mobility makes him vulnerable to ranged enemies and bosses with heavy movement patterns.

When to Play Oongka

When you want to hit things hard without worrying about precision combos. Oongka rewards reading enemy patterns and punishing openings rather than maintaining long combo strings. His natural tankiness and super armor during Rage make him the most forgiving character for players who struggle with dodge timing. The community has not finished exploring his endgame potential, so there may be stronger Oongka builds waiting to be discovered.
